Project Description
The choral suite War’s Embers, commissioned by the Whittingham Lives Association, was composed by Sasha Johnson Manning, to words by poet Ivor Gurney (1890-1937).
Ivor Gurney was an inmate of Winwick, another Lancashire County Council asylum near Warrington. His poetic and musical legacy inspired ‘War’s Embers’ in tribute to those who suffered so grievously in World War One.
The first complete performance of this work was given by St George’s Singers at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on 24th November 2018, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The following audio clips are songs from the Manchester performance of War’s Embers.
