The Hidden Histories – Alternative Futures exhibition was part of the much larger arts and heritage project, Whittingham Lives, in partnership with Lancashire Archives, the Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library and Lancashire County Museum Service.

The exhibition combined creative responses and personal experiences with social, cultural and historical observations relating to the Asylum. The aim was to examine the contribution that the arts can make to health and wellbeing, and to explore how visual art can be used to make visible previously hidden histories. Contributions were from a diverse range of contributors including service users, artists, academics, archivists and writers.
